In 1967, the U.S. Army abandoned a nuclear-powered city under Greenland's ice and decided that was fine. The plan was simple: perpetual snowfall would bury it deeper every year, and the whole thing — the tunnels, the reactor waste, the diesel, the sewage, the classified documents — would be entombed forever.

In April 2024 NASA's UAVSAR on a Gulfstream III imaged Camp Century while mapping the ice bed; Alex Gardner: 'We were looking for the bed of the ice and out pops Camp Century'; Chad Greene: individual structures 'visible in a way that they've never been seen before'.
The camp's structures now lie at least 30 m (100 ft) below the surface.
Luminescence dating shows sediment at the base of the Camp Century core was deposited in an ice-free environment 416,000 ± 38,000 years ago (Science, July 2023).
